This force may cause death or dysfunction of the brain cells called the primary injury. This primary injury is not reversable. The secondary injury usually a result of increased intracranial pressure, occurs over time and is associated with further damage to brain tissue. As pressure within the skull increases, brain tissue displacement can lead to cerebral herniation, resulting in disability or death.
Urgent neurosurgery aims to reduce the intracranial pressure and prevent brain displacement.
